What is acupuncture?
It is a method that has been practiced for thousands of years in the treatment of many diseases and symptoms. It is used alongside Western medicine methods and complements them in proven and prescribed indication areas.
Acupuncture is a therapeutic method developed in the system of traditional Chinese medicine with its beginnings almost 3,000 years ago.
Since 1979 it has been recognized, accepted, and integrated into Western medicine when appropriate guidelines and indications were adopted for the application and treatment of a range of different conditions and diseases.
That year, the World Health Organization recognized and equated acupuncture with other accepted methods of treatment.
Neurological indications for acupuncture are all pain syndromes, headaches, neuralgia of the trigeminal nerve, paralysis of the facial nerve, rehabilitation after a stroke, peripheral neuropathy, Meniere's disease, neurogenic bladder, intercostal neuralgia, cervicobrachial syndrome, sciatica, pain in the lumbosacral area , and can also reduce the symptoms of many neurological diseases.
Acupuncture treatment is performed with very thin needles, a short-term pricking may be felt at the place of insertion of the needle, but the procedure should be painless and lasts for about 20-30 minutes.
The proven effects of acupuncture on the body are pain relief, reduction of stress and anxiety, improvement of the dynamic balance of the body, stimulation of the immune system, and positive psychological effects.
How does acupuncture work?
Acupuncture points on the body stimulate the central nervous system.
Acupuncture points are points on the body with a high density of nerve endings. By stimulating acupuncture points, the central nervous system is stimulated and natural chemical substances are released in the body that enhance the body's natural healing ability and physical and psychological well-being.
The goal of acupuncture is to restore the proper flow of energy through the meridians to the organs, stimulating their potential for recovery and establishing proper function.
What to expect during the treatment?
The treatment is performed after a thorough examination of the patient, taking a detailed history, and studying all previous medical documentation.
After determining the problem, we can choose which acupuncture channels to activate and by which combination of points. Then we need to determine how many treatments will be needed and possibly decide when, after improvement, the treatment should be repeated.
In a typical treatment, the patient lies down while the doctor inserts between 5 and 20 needles into acupuncture points. The needle pricks create a slight tingling or tickling sensation, but the procedure is not painful. After about twenty minutes, the needles are carefully removed and the treatment is over.
