Electroencephalogram (EEG)
A painless examination that detects the abnormalities of brain waves.
Electroencephalography (EEG) is a functional, painless diagnostic test that is performed using electrodes that are placed on the surface of the head. It graphically registers the electrical activity of brain cells on the computer screen.
EEG is an indispensable test for epilepsy, but it is useful in diagnosing some other conditions such as concussion and brain injury, inflammation and brain tumor, memory loss, short-term loss of consciousness, headaches, dizziness, metabolic disorders, sleep disorders, etc.
During about half an hour, which is the duration of this completely painless examination, the doctor will place small electrodes on your scalp connected to a computer that records your brain activity and displays it as wavy curves on the screen or paper.
The recording technique is performed in a lying position, with eyes closed, in a position that allows peace and relaxation. During the recording, the patient is asked to open and close his eyes on command.
During the recording, activation techniques are carried out that provoke the activity of brain cells, such as deep breathing and photostimulation (stimulation with light), to uncover possible hidden irregularities of brain cells.
How to prepare for the test?
It is advisable to leave out sleep medications, sedatives, and muscle relaxants eight hours before the scan, as these agents can change the findings. It is important to be physically and mentally relaxed, full, and sleepy, with clean hair without styling products (e.g. gel, varnish). Before the test, you should refrain from drinking stimulants (coffee, energy drinks, Coca-Cola, etc.).
