Care and rehabilitation of persons with dementia require a multidisciplinary approach. Specialists from different fields of biomedical sciences (neurologists, psychologists, psychiatrists, nurses, social workers, physiotherapists, dieticians, and occupational therapists) work together to help the patient. Along with professional help, it is extremely important to educate and involve family members, who will spend the most time with the afflicted person.

Let our expert team assist you with a part of the rehabilitation process. We offer the following services:

  • Neuropsychological assessment of cognitive status
  • Psychological counseling of caregivers and/or family
  • Cognitive rehabilitation and training

Neuropsychological assessment of cognitive status

A diagnostic procedure that determines the psychophysical state, with special emphasis on cognitive abilities. In other words, we collect data important for assessing the difficulties and condition of the patient through the interview and the use of psychological tests and questionnaires.

Neuropsychological assessment is carried out individually if the client can independently answer and fill out tests and questionnaires. If necessary, family members or caregivers are included in the assessment.

It is recommended that the patient arrives at the assessment in good health, as symptoms like fever, a sleepless night, or intoxication can adversely affect the results - the person will probably be less able to solve the set tasks.

Cognitive training

An intervention consisting of a series of exercises and tasks that stimulate and maintain cognitive functions. The training is adapted to the capabilities of the participant and has no age limit. The ultimate goal of the intervention is to strengthen cognitive capacities. The training includes counseling on the inclusion of suitable cognitive activities in everyday life.

Cognitive rehabilitation

A common name for various activities aimed at optimizing cognitive functions and daily functioning of people with cognitive impairments or disorders. Cognitive rehabilitation is performed through personalized skills training and the teaching of cognitive strategies and routines.

Activities are designed and combined following the patients' capabilities, but their goal is always the same - to stimulate functional change and strengthen the patient's sense of well-being, thus improving the quality of life and reducing the stress of both the patients and their caregivers.

What is cognitive rehabilitation?

A complete process that leads to the improvement of cognitive functions, which is carried out using multiple trainings and exercises with the affected person. The exercises include different areas of everyday life activities. Most often, they refer to the use of everyday things, which include calendars, the use of the telephone, and sometimes a personal computer.

Written reminders are most often used to remember work and personal obligations so that an afflicted person can remember important events and obligations as easily as possible, thus partially overcoming cognitive impairment and improving the quality of life.

Psychosocial rehabilitation gives the best results if it is carried out in parallel with biological treatment methods. It needs to be implemented in stages. The first phase includes initial biological treatment, the second phase is characterized by readjustment and adoption of forgotten cognitive functions, and the third phase represents professional medical and non-medical assistance to the patient and his family.

Psychosocial rehabilitation activities differ depending on the patient's needs and the stage of dementia. Also, the activities differ according to the place of provision, i.e. where the patient is. All activities in social rehabilitation are aimed at achieving the highest possible life activity.

What is dementia?

Dementia is a syndrome of progressive and global impairment of acquired cognitive abilities and functions with preserved consciousness. It occurs as a result of an organic disease of the central nervous system. Dementia is progressive, incurable, and in the last stages leads to complete dependence on others.

What are the symptoms of dementia?

Dementia is characterized by deterioration and impoverishment of speech and vocabulary, difficulty or inability to perform math calculations, and loss of the ability to reason, judge, and solve problems.

Abstract thinking is significantly impaired in dementia. Disorders that occur in dementia often lead to depression and withdrawal in the affected person. It is not uncommon for a demented person to develop an agitated state, hallucinations, and insomnia.

Patient care

Patients need help with daily functioning, maintenance of personal hygiene, preparation, and consumption of food. In this stage of the disease, anxiety, irritability, passivity, and depression often occur.

Behavioral disorders begin to develop, manifested by physical aggression.

Patients completely lose their sense of time and space. In this stage of the disease, the risk of falling and various accidents is increased. The patient's sleep-wake cycle is disturbed.
